Athletics Program History

St. Athanasius School in Evanston, Illinois, has a long-standing athletics program that plays a vital role in the school's extracurricular offerings. The school itself was founded in 1921, and its athletics program has evolved over the decades to include a variety of sports, reflecting a strong commitment to fostering teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness in its students.

Historically, like many Catholic schools, St. Athanasius placed a strong emphasis on basketball, often one of the flagship sports for both boys and girls. Over time, the program expanded to include sports such as football, cheerleading, volleyball, track and field, cross country, golf, and tennis allowing students to participate in a wider range of athletic pursuits. The program serves students from grades 4 through 8, with c teams participating in the CII-3A

The school’s athletics teams, known for their spirited competition and sportsmanship, are supported by paid & volunteer coaches and an active parent community. In recent years, the emphasis has grown on balancing competition with a developmental approach, ensuring students grow not just athletically but also socially and academically.
