The focus of the Newspaper Club is to write and produce the school’s student newspaper, called “The Kids News Letter,” (KNL). The 8-to-10-page full-color publication is distributed on the last school day of each month. The club creates 9 issues each year.
The Newspaper Club meets every Tuesday morning before school at 7:30 through May. The students suggest stories or are assigned stories for that month’s newspaper. Each meeting involves students using laptops or iPads to work on their stories, columns, and newspaper games; and other supplies to create cartoons, artwork and photos, often collaborating with each other.
Meetings also include guest speakers, press conferences, and tutorials on topics such as journalistic writing guidelines and the basics of photography. And, of course, breakfast snacks are always provided.
The club is open to students in grade 3-8. Each year’s new staff is recruited through school announcements in September for the inaugural club meeting the first Tuesday in October.
Kara Paslaski, third grade teacher at St. Athanasius School, and John Regnier, part-time art teacher, lead the Newspaper Club activities. Ms.Paslaski has had extensive writing experience, as well as working with young students and computer technology. Mr. Regnier majored in journalism and worked as a professional writer in public relations and corporate communications before spending 30 years as a freelance cartoonist.
